Hypnotherapy Misconceptions

In this article, I will discuss several misconceptions with respect to Hypnotherapy. When most people think of Hypnosis, or Hypnotherapy,  they visualize being controlled by a stage hypnotist with a swinging watch. Stage Hypnotists are experts at giving the impression they have power and control over people.  That’s because volunteers do silly and ridiculous things when they go on stage.  No wonder people are afraid to enter a Hypnotherapist’s office, even though it could help them improve their lives! The fact is that the control Stage Hypnotists have is exaggerated. Its an illusion! Stage Hypnotists choose volunteers who enjoy the attention. When they go on stage, these volunteers know they’re going to be the center of attention.  Also, the excitement, and the expectations of the audience make for a good mix. The only control a Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist has over you is the control you give them. You will not do anything against your ethics or moral standards.  A normal amount of control for you to give is to allow them to guide you into a peaceful and relaxed state.
Besides believing Hypnosis is mind control,  many believe that you are asleep or unconscious. In fact, you are more alert when you are hypnotized than when you’re  awake. This is because you have reached a level of mental alertness that is not usually accessible during your normal waking state. During Hypnosis, you are more open to suggestion, which is a good thing if you want to lose weight, quit smoking or have other goals.
Besides a fear of being controlled and being asleep, another misconception is that you will forget everything that happened under Hypnosis. This is untrue. You are always aware of your surroundings during Hypnosis. Your memories of the experience may fade over time as they do when you wake up from a dream.
Another common misconception is that you can get stuck in Hypnosis. No one ever has, and no one ever will get stuck–it’s not possible! You will spontaneously come out of Hypnosis, or you can simply open your eyes at any time and come out of trance.
In this article I have listed several commonly held  misconceptions of Hypnosis. Then, I have refuted these myths by presenting the facts concerning Hypnosis.  It is a powerful tool to help you achieve your goals and overcome obstacles. Please call us with questions.
